Catsfield, Sussex

It was not until the middle of the 19th century that members of the Hunnisett family settled in Catsfield. A notable resident was Charles Honisett, a descendant of William Honeysett (1764-1838) of Herstmonceux. Charles was the first headmaster of the National School in Catsfield and later ran the village stores and post office on Catsfield Green. His nephew, William Honisett, took over as schoolmaster and ran the Catsfield school until he died in 1904. The parish church lies on a hill south-east of the village.

A typical Sussex Smock

The church has a collection of smocks
which used to be worn by pall bearers
at burial services in Catsfield.

The photo shows one of them being
worn at a harvest festival in Lewes.
